DELAYED FACIAL NERVE PALSY FOLLOWING OTOLOGIC SURGERY: WHEN TO SUSPECT A HERPES VIRUS INFECTION? 0 By Alessandro De Stefano, Giampiero Neri, Francesco Dispenza, Daniela Lattanzi on September 8, 2008 Capsula eBurnea Abstract: Facial nerve palsy following middle ear surgery is a terrible complication for every otology surgeon. Generally this hap- pens due to identifiable causes like surgical trauma or local anaesthetic use. It is uncommon to see facial nerve palsy more than 72 hours following the surgery. In this study we report two cases of facial nerve paralysis appearing 11 and 5 days following a successful tympano-mastoid sur- gery and we performed a Viral screening for Herpes Virus type 1 for to confirm the viral aetiology of the Delayed Fa- cial Paralysis. When an ipsilateral facial nerve palsy ap- pears more than 72 hours after an uneventful middle ear procedure, without symptoms of any infection, a viral reac- tivation must be suspected.
